01 · Purpose
Why the journal exists
The International Journal of Infection Prevention exists to advance the science and the practice of preventing infection, and to keep those two things in the same volume.
Prevention is unusual among medical subjects in how widely its evidence is produced. A resistance mechanism is characterized in a laboratory, a transmission route is traced by a field epidemiologist, a reprocessing failure is found by an engineer, a coverage gap is closed by an immunization program, and the practice that results is written into a standard by a ministry. Each of those findings changes what the others should do.
Published separately, that evidence reaches only the specialty that produced it. This journal was founded to give it one place, so that the people responsible for prevention at each point can read what the others have learned, and so that a study framed for one discipline is still assessed on its own scientific terms.
02 · Readership
Who the journal is written for
Its readers are the people who carry prevention out and the researchers whose work they depend on: infection prevention teams and clinical microbiologists, infectious-disease clinicians and surgeons, epidemiologists and surveillance staff, pharmacists running stewardship programs, immunization and public-health services, laboratory and occupational-health managers, veterinarians and food-safety scientists, engineers working on devices and decontamination, and the health economists and policy teams who decide what a service can sustain.
They come to a paper with a practical question — whether a finding holds in a setting like their own — and with a scientific one, about how far the evidence actually reaches. The journal is edited for both, which is why authors are asked to describe the setting and the methods closely enough that a reader elsewhere can judge what transfers. 03 · Editorial responsibility
Who decides, and on what basis
Responsibility for what appears in the journal rests with named editors, working to stated criteria and to safeguards that apply to them as well as to authors.
- 01 A named editorial board The journal is led by an Editor-in-Chief and an editorial board whose members, roles and countries are published in full, each with a verified profile. The board is listed on the editorial board page.
- 02 Screening, then independent review All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review, where they are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
- 03 Stated decision criteria Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
- 04 Decisions independent of money and role Those decisions are reached independently of fees, memberships, optional services, and editorial or reviewing roles. Editors recuse themselves from decisions on their own submissions, which are handled independently.
- 05 Published policies, applied consistently Authorship, competing interests, research ethics, data availability, corrections and retractions are governed by the journal’s editorial policies, with the corresponding duties of editors and reviewers set out in the editors and reviewer guidelines.
04 · Publishing model
The terms the journal publishes on
The journal is published by Open Access Pub. Every article is open access from the day it appears, under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, and authors retain copyright in their work. Each article is registered with Crossref, so it carries a permanent identifier and can be cited and located independently of this site.
Publication is funded by an article processing charge, which is invoiced only after a manuscript has been accepted and takes no part in the editorial decision. The charge for each record type, together with the withdrawal terms that apply once a manuscript has been submitted, is published on the article processing charges page.
