Article Processing Charges

What publication costs, when it is charged, what the charge covers, and the terms that apply once a manuscript has been submitted.

Charged after acceptance Currency USD Open access, CC BY 4.0

01 · The charge

What publication costs

One charge per accepted article, set by the kind of record published. There is no submission fee and no charge for reading.

  • Research articleUSD 1,499
  • ReviewUSD 1,300
  • Methods and toolsUSD 1,100
  • Short communicationUSD 900

The article processing charge is invoiced only after a manuscript has been accepted, and it takes no part in the editorial decision. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal, following peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Which charge applies follows the record type the article is published as. Where the type changes during review — a manuscript accepted as a short communication rather than a research article, for instance — the charge for the published type is the one invoiced.

02 · What it pays for

What the charge covers

  • Editorial assessment and peer-review management — screening, reviewer selection and invitation, and the handling of each round of review.
  • Copyediting, layout and production — preparation of the published version, proofs and corrections.
  • DOI registration and metadata — Crossref registration under the prefix 10.14302, and the metadata that lets discovery services locate the article.
  • Open-access hosting — publication with no subscription or reader charge, under a CC BY 4.0 license.
  • Long-term preservation and platform maintenance — keeping the published record available and citable. The arrangements are described on the indexing and preservation page.

03 · Billing

How and when the charge is raised

  1. 01 Acceptance The invoice is raised after the editor has accepted the manuscript. Nothing is charged at submission or during review.
  2. 02 Invoice The invoice goes to the corresponding author, or to an institutional or funder billing contact where one has been supplied. Send those details, along with grant identifiers and any funder reporting requirements, to [email protected] as early as possible so the invoice is addressed correctly the first time.
  3. 03 Payment Production begins once payment is confirmed. Where an institution or funder pays, its own processing time applies, and the editorial office can supply whatever documentation that process needs.
  4. 04 Publication The article is published after copyediting, author proofs and DOI registration, and appears in open access immediately.

04 · Discounts and relief

Reductions the journal publishes

Membership discount
Current members receive a published discount on the article processing charge: 15% at the individual level and 25% for staff covered by a departmental membership. Membership is optional and supports the journal’s open-access publishing; it confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own manuscripts. Terms are on the membership page.
Billing and fee-relief inquiries
Authors whose work has been accepted and who face difficulty meeting the charge should write to the editorial office at [email protected] before publication. Each request is considered individually on its circumstances. Any reduction agreed is a billing matter settled after acceptance, and is handled separately from the editorial decision, which has already been made.

05 · Withdrawal

Withdrawing a submitted manuscript

Withdrawal policy

Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.

Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.

Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal’s APC.

Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.

The same policy is referenced from the editorial policies page. Questions about how it applies to a particular submission go to the editorial office at [email protected].
