01 · What it is
What membership changes, and what it leaves untouched
Membership is optional and supports the journal’s open-access publishing. It confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own manuscripts.
Publishing here is open to members and everyone else on identical terms. Every manuscript enters the same editorial process, is screened against the same scope, goes to the same kind of independent reviewer, and is decided against the same criteria.
What membership changes is the invoice. A member who has an article accepted pays the published discount on the article processing charge for that article. That is the whole of its effect on publishing, and it applies only after an editor has already accepted the work.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Those decisions are reached independently of fees, memberships, optional services, and editorial or reviewing roles.

The published rates
- IndividualUSD 169 per year 15% discount on the article processing charge for accepted articles. One person.
- DepartmentalUSD 649 per year 25% discount on the article processing charge for accepted articles from covered staff, for up to 10 named people in one department.
- InstitutionalBy arrangement Cover for a larger group, priced by arrangement with the editorial office.
- Trainee rate50% of the individual rate For people in training — fellows, residents and registered students. Current training status is verified at application.
Membership runs for twelve months from the date it starts and is renewed by the member; it lapses unless the member renews it. It is separate from the article processing charge itself, which is invoiced per accepted article and is set out on the article processing charges page.
03 · Deciding
Whether it is worth taking
The calculation is arithmetic, and it is the author’s to make.
An individual membership costs USD 169 and reduces the charge on an accepted research article by 15% — USD 225 on the USD 1,499 rate. One accepted research article in the year therefore covers the membership; a short communication, at USD 900, saves USD 135, which falls a little short of it.
A departmental membership costs USD 649 and reduces the charge for covered staff by 25%. Whether that is worth taking depends on how many articles the department expects to have accepted in the year, which the department is best placed to judge. Authors who publish here occasionally will usually find that paying the charge on its own is simpler.
Membership is a way of supporting open-access publishing as well as a discount, and some members take it for that reason alone. It remains entirely optional, and a manuscript is handled the same way either way.

Taking out a membership
Membership is arranged through the editorial office. Write to [email protected] saying which level you want, and for the trainee rate include evidence of current training status. The office confirms the terms and issues the invoice.
