Membership is optional. It supports the publisher's open-access publishing and reduces the article processing charge for members who publish in the journal.
Submission, review and publication are open to every author on the same terms, member or otherwise. This page states what membership costs, what it reduces, and where editorial judgment stays independent of it.

Editorial independence
Membership and the editorial decision
Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member's own manuscripts.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Those six criteria are the whole of it, and the editor reaching a decision works from the manuscript itself.
What that means in practice
- Every manuscript is handled in turn, reviewed the same way and held to the same standard, whoever sent it.
- Editorial and reviewing roles follow scholarly standing and independent selection.
- Every article the journal publishes is open access to every reader.
Terms
What membership costs and reduces
Membership runs for a year from the date it is taken out. The reduction applies to the article processing charge on a member's own accepted manuscripts.
- Individual
- USD 169 per year, for one named researcher or clinician. Reduces the article processing charge by 15%.
- Department
- USD 649 per year, covering up to ten named members of one department. Reduces the article processing charge by 25% for those members.
- Institutional
- For institutions covering a larger group. Terms, including the number of named members and the reduction, are agreed with the publisher.
- Trainees
- Residents, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers may take out individual membership at a 50% reduced fee, on verification of current training status.
- How the reduction is applied
- The reduction reaches the invoice issued after acceptance automatically, with the member rate already applied. The standard charge is on the Article Processing Charges page.
- Joining or asking
- Write to [email protected] with the tier you are interested in and your institution. Fee questions of any kind, including whether membership would help, are handled by the editorial office and separately from the assessment of any manuscript.
