The charge

What is charged, and when

One charge per published article, raised only once a manuscript has been accepted, so no author pays to be considered.

  • Standard article processing charge. USD 1,800 per article.
  • Charged after acceptance. An invoice is issued when the editorial decision to accept has been made, with any reduction already applied.
  • Readers pay nothing. Every article is free to read from the day it is published, under CC BY 4.0, with copyright retained by the authors.
  • The charge is separate from the decision. Editorial decisions are independent of payment, membership, editorial roles and any paid service.

What it pays for

What the charge covers

The charge funds the work between an accepted manuscript and a permanent, openly available article of record.

Editorial handling
Screening, the management of peer review, and the editorial work of reaching and communicating a decision. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
Production
Copyediting, typesetting, figure and table preparation, and the production of the published PDF and full-text versions.
Identifiers and metadata
DOI registration under the publisher's Crossref prefix, and the deposit of article metadata that makes the work discoverable.
Hosting and open access
Publication on the journal's platform, free to read worldwide, with no subscription or reader charge.
Preservation
The journal's digital-preservation arrangements, described on the Indexing page.

Reductions

Reduced charges and fee relief

Members of the publisher receive a reduction of 15–25% on the article processing charge, according to the membership tier.

The tiers, what each includes and how to join are on the Membership page. Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member's own manuscripts.

Authors who cannot meet the charge are welcome to write to the editorial office at [email protected] before submitting, and to ask what help is available.

How a fee question is handled

Payment instructions are provided with the invoice after acceptance. Questions about an invoice, a payment method or a reduction can be raised with the editorial office at any point in the process.

Withdrawal

Withdrawing a manuscript

An author may withdraw a manuscript at any time. These are the publisher's terms, and they apply in full to this journal.

  • Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
  • Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
  • Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
  • Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
