What the journal is looking for

Work the journal welcomes

These are areas in which the journal actively seeks submissions. They illustrate the remit rather than bound it; related questions in pediatric health and nutrition are equally welcome.

Child health and disease
Physical and mental health, development, and the recognition, diagnosis and management of disease and injury in infants, children and adolescents.
Nutrition, feeding and growth
Feeding practice and dietary intake from breastfeeding and complementary feeding onward, nutritional status and growth, and the methods used to assess them.
Undernutrition and micronutrient deficiency
Wasting, stunting and deficiency states; therapeutic and supplementary feeding; and nutritional recovery.
Nutrition in clinical care
Nutritional assessment, support and intervention in children living with acute or chronic disease.
Prevention, public health and services
Determinants of child health and nutrition in households, communities, schools and institutions, and the delivery of pediatric care.
Mechanism, method and measurement
Laboratory, translational and methodological work directed at a pediatric question, including the development, evaluation or validation of instruments used in children.

Before you prepare a manuscript

What makes a submission a fit

The question the journal asks is whether the manuscript addresses a substantive question about pediatric health, development, nutrition or care.

That a study mentions children, involves a food children eat, or takes place in an institution that serves children is not by itself enough. What matters is that a pediatric question is actually under investigation and is answered by the work.

The journal does not ask for

The full statement of subjects, ages, forms of work and the boundary is on the Aims and Scope page, and the requirements for preparing a manuscript are in the Instructions for Authors.

What follows

What happens to a submission

The same sequence for every manuscript, whoever sends it and whichever route it arrives by.

  • Screening. All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
  • Review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
  • Decision. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
  • Publication. Accepted articles are published open access under CC BY 4.0, with copyright retained by the authors, and carry a DOI under the publisher's Crossref prefix.
