  • Structured abstract (250 words or fewer) and 5 to 12 keywords.
  • Methods detailed enough to replicate; statistics and software named.
  • Ethics approval number and informed consent for studies involving people.
  • For case reports, written patient consent and all identifiers removed.
  • Numbered references in order of appearance (see the format below).
  • Declarations: author contributions (CRediT), funding, data availability, conflicts of interest.

What we publish

Article types

JNRT welcomes the following contributions across clinical and translational neurology.

Original research

Novel empirical studies in clinical or translational neurology, with clearly defined methods and findings.

Review articles

Narrative or systematic overviews of a defined neurology or neuroscience topic.

Case reports

Well-documented single cases or small series of clinical or diagnostic significance, with patient consent.

Short communications

Concise reports of preliminary, focused or single-result findings.

Brief reports

Compact accounts of complete but limited-scope studies, presented in shortened form.

Work without a clear neurology or neuroscience focus is outside our scope. See the full aims & scope →

Preparing your manuscript

Structure & formatting

Use the order and limits below. Manuscripts should be complete and self-contained.

Title
Clear and concise (30 words or fewer); no undefined abbreviations; reflects the study.
Author details
Full names, institutional affiliations, ORCID iDs (recommended), and a designated corresponding author.
Running title
Shortened header version, 60 characters or fewer including spaces.
Abstract
Structured, 250 words or fewer: Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions. Case reports may use a brief unstructured abstract.
Keywords
5 to 12 specific, searchable terms; use MeSH terms where applicable.
Introduction
Up to 500 words: objectives, essential background, and the question or hypothesis.
Methods
Detail sufficient for replication: design, participants, interventions or exposures, outcome measures, statistics (name the software), and ethics approval.
Results
Findings presented logically, with tables and figures, p-values and confidence intervals.
Discussion
Up to 1,500 words: principal findings, comparison with prior work, strengths and limitations, implications, future directions.
Conclusion
Concise summary of the key findings and their clinical or scientific significance.
Declarations
Author contributions (CRediT), funding statement, data-availability statement, and conflict-of-interest disclosure.

Writing quality matters in review. We recommend professional language editing before submission, especially if English is not your first language. Email [email protected] for a referral.

References, tables & figures

How to cite and present data

Reference style
Numbered citations in order of appearance. List the first five authors, then use et al. Authors are responsible for accuracy.
Tables
Each on a separate page with a descriptive title and legend; numbered consecutively (Table 1, Table 2, and so on).
Figures
High resolution (300 dpi minimum) in TIFF, EPS or high-quality JPEG; caption below each figure; text legible after reduction. Remove patient identifiers from all clinical images.
Abbreviations
Define at first use; limit to those that genuinely improve readability.
Journal article: reference format Author AA, Author BB, Author CC, Author DD, Author EE, et al. (Year) Title of the article. Journal Name. Volume(Issue):pages. DOI: 10.xxxx/xxxxx
Research ethics & integrity

Standards every submission must meet

The journal follows COPE-aligned ethics. See our editorial policies for the full statement.

Studies involving people
Must have ethics-committee approval (include the approval number), documented informed consent, and protected participant confidentiality.
Case reports
Require written informed consent from the patient or next of kin for publication, with all identifying details removed or anonymised. State in the manuscript that consent was obtained.
Conflicts of interest
Disclose all financial and non-financial competing interests for every author. Handling editors and reviewers recuse where a conflict exists.
Data availability
Include a data-availability statement; sharing of de-identified data is encouraged where consent and ethics permit.

Author questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I submit my manuscript to JNRT?

Submit through ManuscriptZone, our online editorial and peer-review system, which is the primary submission path. You can also start from the journal submit page, which routes you to the same system. You will receive an acknowledgement within 72 hours.

Is there a fee to submit?

No. Submission and peer review are free of charge. The article processing charge applies only if your manuscript is accepted for publication.

How much is the article processing charge (APC)?

A single charge of $2,100 covers all article types. There is no submission fee and no charge if your manuscript is rejected. See the full charges policy for what it covers.

How long does the first decision take?

We aim for a first decision in about three weeks from submission. Manuscripts undergo Single-blind (double-blind on request) peer review by at least two independent experts.

What type of peer review does JNRT use?

Single-blind (double-blind on request) peer review by a minimum of two independent reviewers. Every decision is signed by a named handling editor in the relevant area of neurology.

What article types does JNRT publish?

Original research, review articles, case reports, short communications, and brief reports. Case reports and well-documented case series are a particular strength of the journal.

Is the journal open access? Who holds copyright?

Yes. Every article is published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) licence, and authors retain copyright of their work.

What is the journal scope?

Clinical and translational neurology and neuroscience: from mechanism to therapy, including neuroimaging, neurorehabilitation and clinical neurophysiology. Work without a clear neurology or neuroscience focus is out of scope.

Are there word limits I should follow?

Yes: a structured abstract of 250 words or fewer, an introduction up to 500 words, and a discussion up to 1,500 words. The title should be 30 words or fewer.

What do I need for a case report?

Written informed consent from the patient (or next of kin) for publication, with all identifying details removed or anonymised. State that consent was obtained, and ensure the case carries a genuine clinical or diagnostic lesson.

What file formats and figure resolution do you require?

Submit the manuscript as an editable text file. Figures should be high resolution (300 dpi minimum) in TIFF, EPS or high-quality JPEG, with a caption below each figure and text that stays legible after reduction.

How should I format references?

Use numbered citations in order of appearance. List the first five authors, then use et al. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of every reference.

Is ORCID required for authors?

ORCID iDs are recommended for all authors and especially encouraged for the corresponding author, because they improve attribution and discoverability.

What ethics and integrity standards apply?

Studies involving people need ethics-committee approval (include the approval number) and documented informed consent. We follow COPE-aligned ethics and screen all submissions for similarity. We have zero tolerance for plagiarism, data fabrication and falsification. A data-availability statement and conflict-of-interest disclosure are required.

Can I submit work that is under review elsewhere?

No. Submissions must be original and not under consideration by another journal. Please confirm this in your cover letter.

What happens after my article is accepted?

Your manuscript is copyedited and typeset, you review proofs, and the final article is published open access with a permanent Crossref DOI and made discoverable through Google Scholar and OpenAlex.
