Journal of Evolutionary Science welcomes submissions throughout the year from researchers, clinicians, and multidisciplinary teams working across evolutionary science. Regular submissions are accepted throughout the year.

The kinds of contribution the journal is looking for
Work is assessed on the contribution it makes to evolutionary science, not on the technique it used to get there. Each of the following is a contribution in its own right.
- Fundamental research — on evolutionary process, pattern and history, from a single protein domain to a whole lineage.
- Applied evolutionary research — where evolutionary concepts, evidence or methods are applied substantively to a practical problem, with their role in the analysis made clear.
- Methods, models and research resources — inference methods, simulation frameworks, software, pipelines and curated datasets, assessed on what they make possible for other researchers.
- Observational and experimental studies — each judged in relation to the claims it makes, not against a single preferred design.
- Replication and confirmation — work that tests whether a result holds is held to the same standard as work that reports one for the first time.
- Reviews and evidence syntheses — that bring a body of work together and say what it does and does not establish.
- Theory, concepts and the history of the field — formal treatments of evolutionary process, and analysis of what evolutionary claims assert.

What the journal asks
One thing, and it is the same for every submission: that the manuscript makes a substantive contribution to understanding evolutionary processes, patterns or concepts, or to the methods, resources and applications used to study them.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Those decisions are independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial roles.
Scope eligibility and the quality of the evidence are assessed separately, so a manuscript that is clearly in scope is read on the strength of its evidence rather than turned away on subject.
Not conditions of submission
A novelty threshold, a mechanistic account, a clinical or practical benefit, a particular organism, setting or population: none of these is required here.

Before you send it
Two pages answer most of what an author needs to settle first, and both are short.
