Article processing charges
What publishing here costs, and when
The Journal of Evolutionary Science is open access: there is no subscription and no charge to read. Publication is funded by an article processing charge, which is raised only after a manuscript has been accepted. Submitting costs nothing, and the charge plays no part in the decision.

The charges

What the charge pays for
The charge covers the work of turning an accepted manuscript into a permanent, openly available article, and of keeping it available.
- Editorial assessment and peer-review management — screening, reviewer selection and the handling of the review process.
- Copyediting, layout and production — preparing the accepted manuscript for publication.
- DOI registration and metadata validation — registering the article with Crossref and checking the metadata deposited with it.
- Long-term archiving and platform maintenance — keeping the article available and citable.
- Open-access hosting and dissemination — making the article free to read worldwide from publication.
Independence
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Those decisions are independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial roles.

From acceptance to publication
The order events happen in, so there are no surprises about when the charge arises.
- AcceptanceThe editorial decision is made on the manuscript. An invoice is raised only once the manuscript has been accepted.
- InvoiceThe invoice goes to the corresponding author or to the institutional billing contact given for the submission.
- PaymentPayment is confirmed by the editorial office. Production may pause while an invoice is outstanding; email [email protected] if a payment needs arranging around a funder's schedule.
- PublicationCopyediting, author proofs and DOI registration, then the article is published open access.
Institutions and funders can pay on an author's behalf. Give the billing contact, grant identifier and any funder reporting requirement early, so invoicing can be arranged to match them.
Billing and fee-relief inquiries
Authors who need to discuss the charge should write to the editorial office before acceptance, setting out the circumstances.
Each inquiry is considered individually by the editorial office. Any arrangement reached concerns billing only: it is made after the editorial decision and has no bearing on how a manuscript is assessed, reviewed or decided.
Membership of the journal is optional and supports its open-access publishing; where it affects the charge, the terms are set out on the membership page. Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member's own manuscripts.

Withdrawing a manuscript
The publisher-wide withdrawal policy, in full.
- Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
- Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
- Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
- Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.

Before you submit
Knowing the charge that will apply, and how it will be invoiced, is easier settled before submission than after acceptance.
