Overview

Thyroid Cancer is a malignancy that arises in the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped endocrine organ in the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism. It is the most common endocrine cancer, and the differentiated forms that originate from follicular cells are generally associated with favorable outcomes when detected and treated early. Thyroid Cancer is classified into several histological types, including differentiated cancers such as papillary and follicular carcinoma, medullary Thyroid Cancer, and rarer entities, with primary sarcomas such as leiomyosarcoma of the thyroid being highly unusual. Management commonly combines surgery, typically thyroidectomy, with radioactive iodine ablation for differentiated disease, and increasingly draws on molecular diagnosis to guide clinical decisions. Research published by the journal examines long-term treatment outcomes in differentiated and well-differentiated disease, the role of molecular markers in diagnosis and management, and the adequacy of preoperative evaluation in medullary cancer. Additional topics include image-guided ablation for thyroid tumors and the radiation-safety implications of radioiodine therapy, such as household exposure after ambulatory treatment. Epidemiological work addresses trends in incidence, including analyses based on employment and insurance data and discussion of global factors contributing to rising detection. Together these aspects span the diagnosis, surgical and radioiodine treatment, surveillance, and population-level study of Thyroid Cancer.
