Indexing and discoverability
Where the record of this journal sits
Different services do different jobs, and they are often spoken of as if they were one thing. This page separates them: what identifies the Journal of Evolutionary Science, what registers its articles, what harvests its metadata, where its records are discoverable, what is independently confirmed as journal-level indexing, and how the content is preserved.

Journal identifiers
The ISSN is what tells a library system, an aggregator or another journal that a citation refers to this journal and not to a similarly named one.
The Journal of Evolutionary Science holds ISSN 2689-4602, and the record can be read in the ISSN Portal. An ISSN is a registered identifier; it is a distinct thing from indexing, and neither implies the other.

DOI registration
Articles are registered with Crossref under the DOI prefix 10.14302, so each has a persistent identifier that continues to resolve if a URL changes.
The journal's Crossref record is at api.crossref.org/journals/2689-4602, and a DOI resolves through doi.org. Registering a DOI deposits metadata and creates a persistent link. It is a registration service, not an index, and it makes no assessment of the article.
Metadata harvesting
The journal's article metadata is exposed for harvesting over OAI-PMH, so aggregators and repositories can collect it without a bespoke arrangement.
The endpoint is https://openaccesspub.org/oai and this journal's records form the set journal:evolutionary-science. Harvesting exposes metadata; whether any given service chooses to collect and display it is that service's decision.

Discovery services
A discovery service collects openly available metadata and makes it searchable. It does not evaluate a journal and inclusion in one is not selective indexing.

- Google Scholar citation metadata — each article page carries the citation metadata Google Scholar reads, including title, authors, journal title, ISSN, volume, issue and DOI. Publishing that metadata is what the journal controls; whether a service includes a record is decided by the service.
Verified journal-level indexing
Selective indexing means a service has assessed the journal and admitted it. It is a different claim from registration, harvesting or discovery, and this journal makes it only where it can be checked.
As checked on 14 September 2026, the services independently confirmed for the Journal of Evolutionary Science are those named in the sections above: ISSN registration, Crossref DOI registration, OAI-PMH metadata harvesting, the OpenAlex source record, and Portico preservation. That list is complete as at that date, and it is what a reader should rely on.

Worth keeping distinct
An identifier is not a registration. A registration is not harvesting. Harvesting is not discovery. Discovery is not selective indexing. Each of the five says something different about a journal, and only the last is an assessment of it.
Deposit in PubMed Central
Eligible NIH-funded manuscripts may be deposited individually in PubMed Central through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).
That route is available to an individual author for an individual manuscript, and it is how an NIH-funded author meets a public-access requirement. Depositing a manuscript this way concerns that manuscript only.
