Article Processing Charges
Enzymes is open access, so publication is funded by a charge to the author rather than by subscriptions. The charge is invoiced once a manuscript has been accepted. There is no submission fee and no charge for review.

When it falls due
Invoicing and payment
The charge belongs to the end of the process, not the beginning. A manuscript is screened, reviewed and decided before any invoice exists.

Nothing is payable to submit or to be reviewed
There is no submission fee and no peer-review fee. A manuscript that is not accepted is not invoiced.

Invoiced after acceptance
The charge is invoiced once the manuscript has been accepted following peer review. The invoice states the amount and how to pay it.

Institutional and funder payment
Many institutions hold funds for open-access charges. The journal issues a formal invoice suitable for institutional or grant processing, and will supply the documentation a funding office asks for. Authors are encouraged to check with their library before submitting.

Billing and fee-relief inquiries
Authors who expect difficulty meeting the charge should write to the editorial office at [email protected] before acceptance, so that the question is settled separately from the editorial assessment. Any arrangement is made by the publisher's billing office.
What it pays for
What the charge covers
The charge funds the work of turning an accepted manuscript into a published, citable article and keeping it available.

Editorial handling and peer review
Running the assessment: screening, identifying and corresponding with reviewers, and the editorial work of reaching a decision.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Production
Copyediting, typesetting, figure handling and the structured XML from which the article and its metadata are generated. Color figures and supplementary files carry no additional charge.

Publication and identification
Open-access publication with no reader charge, under the license stated on the article, and registration of a DOI so the article can be cited and resolved.

Keeping the article available
Hosting the version of record and maintaining its metadata. The journal's preservation arrangements are described on Indexing and preservation.
Paying the charge is not a step in the assessment. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial or reviewer roles.
Withdrawal
Withdrawing a submitted manuscript
Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal at a time is a breach of publication ethics. An author who decides to take a manuscript elsewhere should withdraw it first, on these terms.

Tell the editorial office first
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.

Withdrawal soon after submission
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.

Withdrawal later in the process
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.

Written confirmation
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
