The Three Routes

Primary Route

Alternative Route

Assisted Route
Editorial office — send the manuscript as an email attachment and the office will enter it for you. Useful where a portal or a form is difficult to reach.

Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript. Sending the same manuscript by two routes creates duplicate records and slows its handling. Choosing the form or the editorial office instead of the portal does not change how a manuscript is assessed.
Before You Send It
A short check against the things that most often send a manuscript back at screening.
- The manuscript explains its substantive connection to depression or its treatment, the question it addresses, and the approach used to develop or evaluate its contribution
- Title within 30 words, running title within 60 characters, 5 to 12 keywords
- Abstract within 250 words; introduction within 500; discussion within 1,500
- A title page with every author's full details and the corresponding author identified, and a cover letter
- For double-blind review, an anonymized manuscript with identifying information supplied separately
- Ethics approval and consent statements where human participants are involved, and written consent to publish for any identifiable patient material
- Trial registration details where the study is an interventional clinical trial
- A data-availability statement for every empirical research manuscript
- Competing-interest and funding statements for all authors
- Disclosure of any generative AI tool used in preparing the manuscript
- Tables and figures at the end, each on its own page, with titles and legends
- References cited by number, first 3 authors then et al., DOIs where available

What Happens Next
The sequence a manuscript goes through, from acknowledgment to publication.
- Acknowledgment
- A manuscript acknowledgment number is emailed to the corresponding author.
- Screening
- All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
- Peer Review
- Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- Decision
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions are independent of any fee, membership or optional service.
- Revision
- Where a revision is invited, respond to each reviewer point and say where the manuscript changed. A reasoned disagreement is a legitimate response.
- Charges
- There is no submission fee. An article processing charge applies only after acceptance — see article processing charges.
- Production and Publication
- After acceptance the manuscript is copyedited and typeset, you approve the proofs, and the article is published open access under CC BY 4.0 with a Crossref DOI.

Confidentiality
A submitted manuscript is confidential. Editors and reviewers do not disclose its existence or content and do not use unpublished material for their own purposes.

Personal Data
Personal details supplied at submission are used to operate peer review and publication and are not disclosed for unrelated purposes. The publisher's privacy statement sets out how personal data are handled.

Withdrawal
From submission to publication a manuscript may not be sent elsewhere without official withdrawal confirmation. The terms are on the article processing charges page and in the editorial policies.
