Biography
Dr. Begoña Martínez-Crego is an Assistant Professor at the University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal, specializing in seagrass biology and ecology, bioindicators and biotic indices, biodiversity of seagrass-associated species, ocean acidification and climate change, and species interactions. She holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc, with training from the University of Barcelona, University of Murcia, University of Cadiz, and CAP. Her research has advanced the development of multivariate indices such as POMI for assessing ecological status of coastal waters under the Water Framework Directive, utilizing seagrass species like Posidonia oceanica and Zostera noltii as environmental bioindicators. Her most-cited work, "Responses of seagrass to anthropogenic and natural disturbances do not equally translate to its consumers" (2015), with 42 citations, examines how disturbance impacts on seagrasses differ from effects on associated consumer species. Dr. Martínez-Crego's contributions encompass nutrient enrichment effects, CO₂-driven ecosystem changes, epiphytic assemblages, and macrograzers' influence on seagrass meadows.
