Overview

An enzyme catalyst is a biological molecule, usually a protein, that speeds up a specific chemical reaction without being consumed in the process. Enzymes act as catalysts by lowering the activation energy required for a reaction to proceed, allowing biochemical transformations that would otherwise be slow to occur rapidly under the mild conditions found in living systems. Each enzyme typically recognizes particular substrates through an active site whose shape and chemistry determine its specificity, and its activity can be regulated by factors such as temperature, pH, cofactors, and inhibitors. Enzyme catalysis underlies essential processes including digestion, metabolism, DNA replication, and cellular respiration, and it is also harnessed extensively in biotechnology, industrial chemistry, food production, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, where Enzymes offer efficient and selective alternatives to conventional chemical catalysts. The study of Enzymes encompasses their structure, mechanism, kinetics, and the ways catalytic function can be modified or engineered. Research in this journal examines enzyme behavior at the mechanistic level, including how disrupting an enzyme's hydrogen-bonding network can reduce its catalytic diversity, and how naturally occurring Enzymes such as chitinases find biomedical and environmental applications. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to enzyme catalysts and enzymology.
